Jülich building

This building had collapsed in the first half of the 19th century and has not been rebuild since.
Originally it was built around 1320 as a dwelling for the bailiff’s (administrators) of the castle. At this time the minor children of the count of Vianden were under guardianship of the count of Julich, who commissioned the building.
As the interest of the counts of Vianden had moved away from Vianden since the 13th century, they spend less and less time there, needing an administration in place caring for the estate.
The Julich building was constructed on the remains of older structures formerly containing a treadmill and possibly a bakery. It got its own kitchen inside a formerly free-standing tower.
Already in the 16th century the architecture of the building became unstable and needed continued maintenance and repair through the following 200 years. It was entirely refurbished in the 1620s.
