This side of the castle was the most exposed to attackers and therefore got extra strong defenses. Located there were also the castle’s prisons (inside the 2 towers and the round structure in the center of the place). In the 17th century, a grain outlet was installed next to the wall of the "large palace".

It's unknown how defenses here looked like exactly before the 13th century.

Around the year 1200, a new outer defense wall was constructed, including three towers: The two still existing (white & black tower) at each end of the wall, and a third one in the middle. This third tower has disappeared nowadays except the lower story now located underground (the round bank in the middle of the court outlines its shape).

Between 1350 and 1400, a new stronger wall - the shield wall - was constructed, due to the introduction of cannons in sieges. The middle tower disappeared and the two remaining towers got one supplementary story on top. Cannon ports allowed to defend the castle with fire weapons.

The lower stories of all three towers were used as prisons; later even the upper story were temporarily used for that purpose (for war prisoners).
